You heard it right, I'm having a Clearance Event on Etsy! This will be the last chance to buy these one of a kind special gem trees. Spirit Gems will be going through some changes soon, and I've decided to only keep a few already made gem trees on hand at any one time. You will still be able to order custom gem trees, however! I plan on growing that segment.
The money from this clearance event will help me purchase supplies for my future work. I want to turn my Tree of Life Hangings into something bigger and more complex. The current Tree of Life hangings are very popular, and sales can only grow when you have more sizes and patterns to choose from!
I still have to photograph around 100 gemstone bracelets. While I can be very artistic, I'm having a hard time figuring out how to photograph these bracelets, to convey their individual beauty and size. I am thinking of having the gem chip bracelets for sale around $10 each and then 6mm round gem bracelets $15 each. My previous bracelets sold well, but I had many customers looking for a single gemstone. Now you can purchase just an Obsidian bracelet, or a Jade bracelet. They're a lot of fun to make, and they bring a lot of joy to the wearer.
In the coming weeks, I'm not entirely sure how much time I will have to devote to my new work. I have accepted a caretaking job and not only will be moving, but also beginning part time work. It will help fill that much needed income gap while I get things moving smoother. I am also trying to further develop Oddball Cat Toys. I was able to complete my first cat collar prototypes last week, and in the process of making some more before they are listed for sale on Etsy. I'm really excited about these, and I am hoping sales do well!
If I have any spare time in between projects, I have a dream of making interior design products, like pillows, rugs and possibly blankets. We'll see what happens. I also found some really neat decoupage ideas in a magazine, and I'm dying to try some of them out!
I'm a girl with way too many great ideas!
I thought I already did a post on the Har Mar Show, but apparently not! I apologize. I've been wrapped up, literally, in making my new bracelet line this last week. I decided to discontinue the former Mala Bracelets, and just make bracelets out of one type of gem, instead of mixing them. The results look so fabulous! I am very happy with them. Whatever doesn't sell at my show tomorrow, will be listed on Etsy next week. I will probably have a few new gem trees to add as well, if they don't sell first.
So... Har Mar Mall. It was a very interesting show! The weather turned out to be beautiful both days, and team that with no advertising, it was a thin crowd. We still did really well and made some profit! People still swarmed the table, and we had a few people from previous shows stop by and visit. I'd call it a success! I really want to get into other rock shows around the region, but unfortunately I'm finding them all very full with waiting lists. I'm hoping my time on the list will come and I get to attend more! But anyways... We talked with several vendors there, and very few were able to make their money back. We count ourselves lucky to have done it, but we also really work our butts off! Someone is always at the table, and we're always adjusting merchandise. We noticed several vendors kept their tables unattended and weren't around to answer questions. Its the one simple thing you can do, to improve your sales- pay attention to your customer!
We have a show coming up tomorrow at the Midtown Music Festival. It is held at the Midtown Global Market on Lake Street in Minneapolis. I heard that there will be thousands of people in Minneapolis this weekend, and I hope to see many of them at our booth! I cannot tell you how nervous it makes me though! There's always a fear there, a fear of being really successful. I don't know why! I've also had scouters attend shows, and as much as you dream of going somewhere with your business, its when it finally does happen...! I was actually found on Etsy and invited to this juried show. I feel very honored to have been chosen! I spend so much time on my business, and it is such a great feeling when you get noticed in the sea of sellers on Etsy.
I think I'm going to cut down the gem tree line a bit, and still focus on things that are easier to sell. The Tree of Life Hangings have been selling so well, and I am hoping the same for my new bracelets when they hit the public. I have plans of developing the current Hangings into a larger size, so they can also be hung on a regular wall as décor. I want to redesign the jewelry tree stands, and give them all bases. I have a few marble slabs, and we're going to be cutting up some raw wood off a tree, and use the circular cuts as bases. I am really close to developing my unique cat collars too, out of my friendship bracelet designs. I'm still not finding any wear on my girl Angie's collar, which means they're extremely durable! She has long nails and has a tendency to scratch a lot, and after a fashion her collars really wear and they normally need to get replaced once a year. The other fun part about the bracelets is that they're fun, colorful and very unique! Once I get the design figured out and the first prototype is done, I'll post a picture. Its not exactly a gem tree, but maybe if I add a gem they can be added to my current line? :-)
All right, back to work for me! I have to figure out some sort of signage for the show tomorrow. I'm also trying to decide if I need more business cards or not. Its amazing how many we hand out at shows!
Have a great weekend!
Things have been very busy here lately, but they're going pretty well! I am happy to report despite all the challenges, I WILL be attending the upcoming Har Mar Mall Rock Show April 20-21st! The prices will be about the same as on Etsy; I'm more interested in moving units than charging their true value.
It is also just over a month before Mother's Day, and now's the time to be thinking of presents! The majority of customers I have are women, so you can't go wrong with either a Gem Tree, Tree of Life Hanging, or Jewelry! I still have many colors and designs to choose from, and you can definitely still order a custom made piece if you have something else in mind. I have custom forms with me too, at the rock show, if you stop by and want to order in person. And speaking of jewelry, I still have the option of Tree of Life brooches! The listing is still up on Etsy. They can be made just a little smaller than the dimensions I mentioned (I think it was 3x2"). You can even use them to help tie back a fashion scarf, if you don't want to pin it to your shirt.
I want to point out especially, Kevin's gemstone jewelry. His pieces are super popular with the females! He had a beautiful Sodalite piece, and his mother couldn't stop obsessing about it, so three weeks later on her birthday, he gave it to her as a gift. She's not one to wear a lot of jewelry, but she constantly wears her Sodalite necklace! He also gave a uniquely shaped piece to his sister, who also obsessed about it. I currently have two of his pieces in my shop, and we will need to add the others shortly! Here are the links to them:
His pieces are very well made, and he really pays attention to the fine details! I highly recommend purchasing his jewelry. Most definitely!
I have no new products in the work just yet, but some ideas! I've been thinking if there's a way of creating flowers out of the gem chips. I can do a small one like I did for some of the Tree of Life Hangings, but I want an actual sizable mini bouquet. People still use flowers as decor, so why not try? It would be a great compliment to the gem trees.
I'm also debating whether or not to add new gem trees for the upcoming rock show. I've sold out of several gem trees in the past month, but I kind of also like the idea of staying away from my typical cluttered look. The gem trees will get better representation not being stuffed on a small table, although I want to make sure there are enough choices so that everyone can find something they're drawn to. I'll think hard about it! I'm all set to move next weekend, so I don't have a lot of time to get ready for the show.
On a final note, I expect zero business interruption with my upcoming move. I have everything organized so I can quickly pull orders and get them out the door quickly. So keep the orders coming, I really greatly appreciate it! Its given me the drive I needed to be able to attend the upcoming show. :-)
I totally forgot to introduce Kevin's jewelry! There are two pieces currently for sale on Etsy, and we hope to get the rest up this weekend.
The first is a really beautiful necklace made with Amethyst & Taiwan Turquoise. He has this fun concept of "Angel On My Shoulder". If you look on the left, there is a custom made Angel charm that sits on your shoulder as you wear the piece! The photos don't do the necklace justice. The Amethyst is a clear(er) type, and I am unable to pick up its true color with my camera. The pink centerpiece is a special Taiwan Turquoise. The circle findings really sparkle with the Amethyst too.

This is another one, a Vesuvianite, Garnet & Red Howlite combination. This is another stunning piece in person, with shiny, almost sparkling silver spacers in between the dramatic dark red Garnet and olive green Vesuvianite. The big circular red gems are Red Howlite.

Kevin puts a lot of time and effort into his work, and his pieces are very high quality. They are certain to please any lady looking for a unique and fun piece of gemstone jewelry to wear! :-)
I apologize for being unhappy with the way things were going on Tuesday. Unfortunately, it happens in the business. Its tough when you don't have the big money to easily grow your business and hire people to do the work for you. I've decided to just let things run its course with the business, and keep it a specialty art item. I don't want to lower the quality so that it becomes a dime store bargain.
I've been having a blast coming up with cat toys, for the new business! Its been fun learning a new craft and working with yarn. I am counting on this business to be the one that can be branded and sold anywhere, unlike the gem trees. Every toy that I make is carefully hand knitted and sewn together. Some of them are stuffed with safe, non-toxic materials, others are not. I don't stuff them with catnip because I know some cats don't like catnip, and then dogs can also play with them. You can request catnip when you order though! These toys are completely unique and as of right now one of a kinds. I need to learn how to make patterns and at least stick with some staples, instead of having all unique. I'm finalizing the name and will be starting the Etsy store and website shortly. I'm not neglecting the gem tree business, rather, I'm splitting my time up between the two!
As for future shows, I am going to talk with the Minneapolis Farmer's Market about a trial run when they open at the end of April. It may be a little more expensive than some, but it draws in an interesting crowd! If I can keep attending regularly, I'm sure that word will get out and I will have a nice following. I've been told so many times you cannot be there just once or twice and expect sales. I'm willing to commit if its a good venue! The idea is to mostly carry the pet toys, jewelry, tree of life wall hangings and just a small selection of gem trees, until they become popular enough to warrant more. Its a shame there isn't an indoor venue like this in MN, or hopefully we're in for a cool summer!
The other show coming up is the Har Mar Rock Show on April 20-21st! I'll be working hard on coming up with a better display so the trees aren't so crowded, and the gemstone jewelry has its own area.
I have an opportunity to sell this spring at a boutique in Edina. I'm still unsure, they take between 25-30% and I think these were the people saying my items were way too expensive for their store. I'll have to think about it, and ask some questions. It would be great to send some gem trees there, because if you cannot make it out to the rock show, you can buy them in a store!
Thank you to those that keep up with my business. :-)
I would like to remind you of tomorrow's upcoming Forest Lake Craft Show! Please come see us at the Spirit Gem Designs booth! We will be at the American Legion on 355 W Broadway Ave, Forest Lake, MN 55025, from 9:30-4:30pm. I haven't done a craft show venue yet, so I'm excited to see what happens! If this show goes well, I will be adding more in the next weeks, in addition to the Har Mar Mall Rock Show on February 23-24th.
I have worked hard over the past couple of weeks to build up inventory. I will have many jewelry tree stands, some with bases, to choose from, as well as my gem trees and gem tree jewelry.
I am still undecided about proceeding with the jewelry that I have, so I came up with a way of converting it into a beautiful suncatcher/dreamcatcher! This option is excellent for people wanting a gem tree, but aren't sure if their animals would respect it, or they have a good spot to put it in their homes. After tomorrow I will be putting suncatchers up for sales on Etsy. Their price should be around $25-35.
I am also working hard on getting the Valentine's Day line of gem tree jewelry going. Some will be at tomorrow's show and the rest will be on Etsy starting Sunday. Standard ship time will be 1-3 days in the US, so there's still plenty of time to order something for your sweetheart!
That's it for now, its back to work for me to tackle the mountain of work needed to be done before tomorrow's show! Hope to see you there if you
